The next morning I wake up early enough to sit with Asher as he drinks his morning cup of coffee.
“Morning Leah, you’re up early today.”
“How early is it?” I ask, rubbing sleep from my eyes.
“Just about seven o’clock. So, how did you sleep?” he asks.
“I slept good last night for the first time in a long time. Thank you for that. I think being here with you helped that happen.”
“No thanks needed, I didn’t do anything.”
I realize it’s time for me to start speaking the truth. “You were here, that is huge all by itself. It’s nice to know I don’t have to think or worry about anything. I knew you were here to take care of anything that would happen.”
“I would do anything for you, Angel.” Hearing the nickname no longer bothers me. It warms me on the inside. I can hear how he feels about me when he calls me that.
“You have a long day at work today?”
“No, actually I was getting up early to start my day and hit the gym. The plan was for me to be back before you woke up.”
“Oh. Sorry.”
“Why don’t you go back and get some more sleep?”
“I’m not tired.” The words no sooner leave my lips and I’m yawning.
“Could have fooled me.” He takes another sip of his coffee. The last thing I want is to be the needy frail person who is afraid of everything. A good night’s sleep is something I haven’t had in a long time. My eyes say that Asher is right. I need some more sleep.
“Alright, you win.” He empties his mug and sets it in the sink. “Let’s go back to bed for a while longer.”
Let’s go back to bed, just the way he says those five words to me is all the foreplay a girl would ever need. Damn, he is fine. If I wasn’t so damaged, I could see myself wanting more with him. I crawl back into the bed, sandwiched between layers of pale blue. Asher fluffs the pillow behind my head. He is beside me; we both lay on our backs. I feel his hand move under the covers, and his fingers creep across the sheet to find mine. When he does, he laces our fingers together. That simple gesture soothes the restlessness inside me. I close my eyes and drift back to sleep.
